Our Honeymoon · 2027♥ Shortlist

African Safari Honeymoon — Options for Jan 5 – Feb 20, 2027 (vs. the Galápagos plan)

Review corrections (Astra critique, Oct 13, 2026) — read these first; they supersede figures below where they conflict.

  • Totals are estimates, not ceilings. Camp prices are published “from” rates and nothing is held yet. Get itemized, date-specific quotes (incl. card/payment fees) and hold camps + flights together before committing.
  • Kenya (Option 2) is now the recommended safari (“best fit”): more margin, two dive days, balloon, least motion. Priced with a private vehicle (+$2,100) → ≈ $25,916. Tanzania Option 1 is “best calving experience.” Kicheche’s 50% bride offer applies at Kicheche Valley only.
  • Option 1 fixes: dive Feb 3–4 (two dive days as budgeted), whale-shark snorkel Feb 5 (optional); request sheltered check-out dives (Kinasi Pass is a tidal drift). NCA fees may add a sixth fee period (+$141.60). Ndutu→Mafia routes via Arusha, Zanzibar and Dar — get an operator-managed through-routing; 15 kg soft bags.
  • Option 3: the Ngorongoro game-package price was estimated — get one Lemala quote incl. crater visit and transfers; add the $50 Kilindi infrastructure tax (≈ $28,457, margin ≈ $1.5k).
  • Option 4: make the Diani add-on 4 nights for dive-to-fly slack.
  • Option 5: Bazaruto is a 60–70 min boat crossing + road transfer; quote Anantara’s own scuba package ($45 pp shared transfer) instead of the private-boat allowance.
  • Diani diving: Diving The Crab (PADI 5-Star) lists 4 dives for $260 pp incl. gear (computer extra) — cheaper than budgeted.
  • Insurance: buy at the first deposit (waiver deadlines), covering scuba, ballooning, gorilla trekking and evacuation.
  • Worth one more quote: Wilderness (spouse 50% off + free flying, incl. Wayo from 2027) and andBeyond’s 2027 spouse offer; Seychelles as a single-island beach finish.

Researched Oct 13, 2026 for a Boston couple married Jan 1, 2027. All prices USD for two unless marked “pp” (per person) or “pps” (per person sharing). Hard cap: $30,000 all-in.

Bottom line: For this window, the once-a-year spectacle is the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti / Ndutu (late Jan – Feb). The best way to do it inside $30k — with top guest reviews, intimate camps, fly-in transfers (kind to the motion-sick partner) and a genuinely good dive finish — is Option 1: 5 nights at Asilia’s Olakira (9 tents, 4.9★/855 on Tripadvisor) + 4 nights at Pole Pole on Mafia Island (whale sharks + sheltered Chole Bay diving) ≈ $27,602. If you’d rather maximise exclusivity, slack in the budget and the gentlest logistics, Option 2 (Kenya’s Kicheche conservancy camps + Diani, ≈ $23,816) is the best value and the safest bet.

1. Ranked summary

Rank Option Badge Best dates (door-to-door) Days / nights on ground All-in (two) Margin under $30k Why
1 Calving Season & Whale Sharks — Ndutu (Olakira) + Mafia Island (Pole Pole) 🏆 Best overall Tue Jan 26 → Sun Feb 7 13 days / 10 nights $27,602 $2,398 Peak-calving plains from a 4.9★ 9-tent camp, fly-in/fly-out (no long drives), honeymoon 25% off each, then whale sharks + calm-bay diving at Mafia’s #1-rated lodge.
2 Mara Conservancies & Diani Reef — Kicheche Valley + Kicheche Bush Olare + Waterlovers 💰 Best value / safest bet Wed Jan 27 → Tue Feb 9 (any dates Jan 6–Feb 20 work) 14 days / 11 nights $23,816 $6,184 Two 6-tent camps rated 5.0★, bride stays 50% off, night drives + walks + balloon, dry-season Kenya; room to add a private vehicle and still keep ~$4k spare.
3 Crater, Calving & Kilindi — Lemala Ngorongoro + Lemala Ndutu + Kilindi Zanzibar 🌴 Most luxurious beach Wed Feb 3 → Tue Feb 16 14 days / 12 nights $28,336 $1,664 Classic Tanzania (crater + calving at peak) on Lemala’s big honeymoon deal, then a plunge-pool pavilion at Kilindi (live availability confirmed). More driving; thinner margin.
4 Gorillas & Walking Wilderness — Rwanda (Da Vinci) + Kicheche walking/fly-camp 🧗 Adventure pick Mon Feb 1 → Sat Feb 13 13 days / 10 nights $24,444 $5,556 Mountain gorillas + golden monkeys, then walking safaris, a night in a wild fly-camp, night drives and a balloon. +3-night Diani dive finish fits (≈ $28,152).
5 Botswana Secret Season & Bazaruto — Machaba Camp + Gomoti Plains + Anantara Bazaruto 🌿 Southern-Africa alternative Sun Jan 31 → Sat Feb 13 14 days / 11 nights $28,088 $1,912 Green-season value in the Okavango + Mozambique diving — but it’s the rainy/cyclone season, lots of flights, and the tightest budget.

My recommendation: Option 1 if the calving spectacle is the point of going to Africa in February (it is the “Galápagos-level” wildlife event of this window), Option 2 if you value a calmer, cheaper, more exclusive honeymoon with the least motion exposure. Both are bookable inside the cap with real buffers; Options 3–5 are good but either thinner on margin (3, 5) or trade the beach for adventure (4).

2. How these numbers were built (be conservative)

  • Lodging: published 2027 rack rates from operator rate sheets where available (Kicheche, Elewana/Kilindi, Machaba, Lemala via Wetu, Da Vinci) or published 2026-27 agent rate guides (Olakira via Siyabona/AfricanMecca, Pole Pole, Waterlovers). Honeymoon discounts applied exactly as each operator’s T&Cs read (see each option). Nothing is a “quote” — expect agents to match or beat these, but treat them as ceilings.
  • Flights: live Kayak / Google Flights economy fares checked Oct 13, 2026 for the actual weeks, then rounded up (e.g., $1,421–1,598 seen → $1,600 budgeted). Regional fares from Coastal Aviation’s published 2023–27 fare schedule and Safarilink/agent fare tables.
  • Government fees (2027): Serengeti entry $82.60 (high season 16 May–14 Mar), Serengeti/NCA concession $59, NCA entry $70.80, Tarangire $59, Mara conservancies $150 pppn (Kicheche) — from the Elewana and Kicheche 2027 rate sheets; Ngorongoro Crater vehicle fee $295 per descent (fee guide). I add a 2-day Serengeti-park contingency in Tanzania options because the herds sometimes sit inside the national park in Feb.
  • Tips (stated assumption): guide $25 pp/day + camp staff $20 pp/day (= $90/day per couple on safari); beach staff $15 pp/day; dive crew ~$10 pp/dive day; drivers $20–40; gorilla trek: porter ~$25, trackers/ranger ~$30 pp per trek.
  • Insurance: $1,400 for two (comprehensive incl. evacuation; make sure scuba is covered — or add DAN, which I’ve included as $150 in dive options). Tanzania now also requires a $44 pp NIC inbound policy (from Oct 1, 2026; one policy covers mainland + Zanzibar) — details, 2.
  • Health: travel-clinic visit + malaria prophylaxis ≈ $500 for two; +$500 where yellow-fever vaccine is advised (Kenya’s Mara).
  • Meals not included in a board basis (arrival nights, transit days, half-board lunches) and a $600 misc buffer are separate lines. The “margin” is what’s left after all of that.
  • Live availability: safari camps here are enquiry-only or agent-login (Lemala’s live-availability form is reCAPTCHA-gated; Kicheche’s ResRequest calendar needs an agent login; Asilia/Machaba/Pole Pole are enquiry-only). Confirmed live: Kilindi Zanzibar’s booking engine shows rooms available every night Jan 4–Feb 28, 2027 from $1,205/room/night (booking engine); Google Hotels showed Anantara Bazaruto at $1,132/night for Jan 19–20, 2027; all flight fares above were live.

3. Where to be between Jan 5 and Feb 20 — honest seasonal trade-offs

Region Verdict for this window Why / trade-offs
Tanzania – southern Serengeti / Ndutu ★★★★★ Best spectacle ~500k wildebeest calve on the short-grass plains, peaking in February (~8,000 calves/day), with lions, cheetahs and hyenas everywhere (Safarani, Edel Safaris). Short dry spell between rains → sun with some afternoon showers. Downsides: it’s peak season (camps sell out, prices high), sightings around Ndutu can get busy, and herd location shifts with rainfall (camps are mobile for that reason).
Tanzania – Ngorongoro Crater ★★★★ add-on Resident big game all year; rim is cold at night (2,300 m+); crater floor gets busy and the descent road is rough.
Tanzania – Tarangire ★★ skip Wet season — elephants disperse away from the river.
Kenya – Masai Mara conservancies ★★★★½ Best value Jan–Feb is the short dry season: hot, clear, superb resident cats, lush plains, fewer visitors than Jul–Oct. Conservancies cap vehicles and allow walks, night drives and off-road. No mega-herds (they’re in Tanzania). Kicheche’s “mid season” pricing runs Jan 3–Feb 28.
Rwanda – Volcanoes NP gorillas ★★★★ Short dry season mid-Dec–Feb = firmer trails (Uncompromised, Rwanda Eco). Permit $1,500 pp.
Botswana – Okavango/Khwai ★★★ value, wetter “Green/secret season”: lush, baby animals, big savings (Machaba 11 Jan–31 Mar rates) — but hot, afternoon storms, some tracks flooded, and the Okavango flood doesn’t arrive until mid-year so water activities are limited (flood cycle).
South Africa – Sabi Sands/Timbavati ★★★ Summer: hot, wet, green; excellent leopard viewing; cheap flights. Good, just not distinctive vs. East Africa in Feb.
Zambia – South Luangwa ✗ Most bush camps close Nov–Apr; rains make roads impassable (guide).
Namibia ✗ Very hot, Etosha game disperses with rains, long road transfers (bad for motion sickness), no diving.
Coast/dive finishes — Mafia whale sharks Oct–Feb (most reliable Nov–Jan) + sheltered Chole Bay (Kearsleys, 2); Zanzibar/Mnemba dry and clear Jan–Feb; Diani Oct–Apr is the calm, clear season, with whale-shark chances Jan–Mar (Calico Jack’s); Mozambique is in cyclone season Jan–Mar; Seychelles/Mauritius are in their wetter monsoon/cyclone season.

Option 1 — 🏆 Calving Season & Whale Sharks (Best overall) — $27,602, margin $2,398

Dates Tue Jan 26 → Sun Feb 7, 2027 (13 days door-to-door; 1 + 5 + 4 nights)
Why these dates Herds are settled on the Ndutu short-grass plains and calving is getting going in late Jan, building to the Feb peak; early Feb is still inside Mafia’s whale-shark season (Oct–Feb, most reliable Nov–Jan). Outside the festive blackout for honeymoon offers. If calving matters more than whale sharks, slide the whole plan 7–10 days later (e.g., Feb 3–15) — same prices.
Regions Arusha (1 night) → Ndutu, southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area (5) → Mafia Island Marine Park (4)
Camps Arusha Coffee Lodge (Elewana; transit night, Plantation Room) → Olakira Migration Camp, Asilia — 9 tents + 1 family unit in its southern (Dec–Mar) location, mesh-roofed “star-gazing” tents (Asilia) → Pole Pole Bungalows — 9–12 bungalow suites (the lodge’s own site says both) on Utende beach, Chole Bay (Pole Pole)
Board basis Olakira Fully Inclusive (all meals, house drinks, laundry, scheduled open-vehicle game drives, Ndutu-airstrip transfers, TDL). Pole Pole Full Board Plus (all meals + selected free excursions: snorkel trip, sunset cruise, Chole Island walk, etc. per its price list)
Activities included Twice-daily game drives on the calving plains, sundowners; at Mafia: snorkel/sunset/Chole excursions. Extra: whale-shark snorkel ($70–100 pp), scuba, optional balloon over the plains (Olakira lists it; price on request)
Vehicle policy Olakira: scheduled shared open vehicles with an Asilia guide (only 9 tents, so vehicles stay small); a private vehicle is available on request (get a quote — not budgeted).
Honeymoon perks Asilia Honeymoon Offer: 25% off each partner’s accommodation, portfolio-wide (park/concession fees and the $10 Asilia conservation charge payable in full; most Asilia offers are not combinable) — Asilia offers. Ask Pole Pole for honeymoon touches (no published discount).

Rates used: Olakira Fully Inclusive $1,490 pps/night for 20 Dec 2026 – 28 Feb 2027 (Siyabona 2026-27 rates); cross-check: AfricanMecca’s all-in package (incl. flights + park fees) is $1,725 pp per extra day in Jan–Feb 2027 (AfricanMecca). Pole Pole $325 pppn (20 Dec 2026 – 15 Feb 2027) (rate table; AfricanMecca shows $380 pp extra day incl. extras — AfricanMecca).

Diving (Mafia Island)

  • Centre: Mafia Island Diving, Pole Pole’s in-house partner (TA 4.9/515; Google 4.9/146); runs PADI and SSI courses.
  • Sites: inside Chole Bay in Mafia Island Marine Park (e.g., Kinasi Pass drift, Chole walls) — sheltered water inside the bay is the kindest option of any here for a seasick partner.
  • Whale sharks: snorkel (not scuba) with Kitu Kiblu ($100 pp) or Big Blu ($70 pp); season Aug–Mar per Pole Pole’s list, most reliable Nov–Jan (Pole Pole price list, season guide).
  • Cost: double boat dive $105 pp, full gear $25 pp/day, marine-park fee $23.60 pp/day.

21 Misc buffer (laundry extras, premium drinks, souvenirs, eSIM, ATM fees) $600 est
All-in total $27,602
Margin under $30,000 $2,398

Variants: 4 Olakira nights instead of 5 → ≈ $24,997 (margin ≈ $5,003). Private vehicle at Olakira and the balloon are not in the total — ask for quotes and use the margin.

Motion-sickness notes

Only flights — no long road transfers. Day 8 is the long small-plane day (several short hops ≈ 5 h door-to-door); pre-medicate and sit up front. Gentler alternative: Ndutu → Dar (10:55–14:55), a night in Dar, and Dar → Mafia next morning (30-min flight), ≈ +$400. Game drives on the plains are bumpy; ask for the front row. The whale-shark boat idles and rolls while spotting — the single most queasy-making activity in this option.

Health / visas

Tanzania eVisa $100 pp (official portal) + NIC inbound insurance $44 pp. Yellow-fever certificate not required on this routing (Amsterdam), but Tanzania demands one if you transit a yellow-fever country (e.g., Kenya, Ethiopia) for 12 h+. Malaria risk throughout Tanzania incl. Mafia/Zanzibar → prophylaxis (atovaquone-proguanil is the beach-friendly choice; doxycycline causes sun sensitivity) — CDC Tanzania.

Booking urgency

High. Olakira has only 9 tents in peak calving season and we’re ~3.5 months out — send the enquiry this week with 2–3 date spreads; backups in the same style: Ubuntu Migration Camp (Asilia, TA 4.9/572), Lemala Ndutu (TA 4.8/152), Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp (TA 4.9/345, 6 tents). Ticket the long-haul only after the camp confirms.

Option 2 — 💰 Mara Conservancies & Diani Reef (Best value / safest bet) — $23,816, margin $6,184

Dates Wed Jan 27 → Tue Feb 9, 2027 (14 days; 1 + 3 + 3 + 4 nights). Any dates Jan 6–Feb 20 price the same — Kicheche’s “mid season” runs Jan 3–Feb 28. Late Jan also gives time to get your certified marriage certificate for the honeymoon rate.
Why Kenya now Short dry season: hot, clear, excellent resident lions/cheetahs/leopards on lush plains; far fewer vehicles than Jul–Oct; conservancies allow walking, night drives and off-road. Diani is in its calm, clear season (Oct–Apr) with whale-shark chances Jan–Mar (Calico Jack’s).
Regions Nairobi (1) → Mara Naboisho Conservancy (3) → Olare Motorogi Conservancy (3) → Diani Beach (4)
Camps Kicheche Valley Naboisho — 6 elevated tents (5 + 1 family suite) on a secluded hillside (Kicheche) → Kicheche Bush Olare — 6 tents (5 + 1 family suite), in-tent massage (Kicheche) → Waterlovers Beach Resort — 8 suites + 1 villa + 1 penthouse, all ocean-front
Room / board Standard tents, full board incl. drinks, picnics, laundry, airstrip transfers (conservancy fee $150 pppn extra); Waterlovers ocean-front suite, half board
Activities included Shared game drives, guided bush walks; complimentary night drives at Kicheche Valley; Maa Trust visit from Bush Olare. Extra: balloon (budgeted), Maasai village $30 pp, wild-camp night $200 pp
Vehicle policy Shared custom 4WDs with Silver-rated guides; small camps keep loads low (Kicheche vehicles typically max 4 guests — Swiss African). Guaranteed private vehicle: $350/day (mid season, min 2 days) → 6 days = $2,100 (optional; total would be $25,916, still $4,084 under the cap).
Honeymoon perks Kicheche Valley: the bride stays at 50% off (25% Jul–Sep), plus a complimentary 30-min massage and a romantic bush dinner by your tent; travel within 12 months of the wedding; not combinable (Kicheche specials, 2027 rate sheet).

Rates used: Kicheche 2027 rack, mid season: Valley Naboisho $860 pps, Bush Olare $860 pps, Mara North $750 pps; conservancy fee $150 pppn (Kicheche 2027 rates). Waterlovers $275 pp/night HB 2027 (AfricanMecca).

Kicheche Valley Naboisho 5.0 (243); Service 5.0, Cleanliness 5.0, Value 4.8 (link) 4.9 (56) Guides, intimacy, honeymoon touches (“Dream Safari Honeymoon”). One reviewer had a guide/group mismatch the manager fixed; one preferred Kicheche Mara North.
Kicheche Bush Olare 5.0 (570) (link) 4.9 (31) “Could not believe it could be as good as people said. It was.” Big-cat density, low vehicle numbers.
Waterlovers Beach Resort 4.9 (868), #1 of 46 in Diani (link) 4.7 (214) Tiny, quiet, every suite on the sand, free beach beds. Watch-out: seaweed at low tide some weeks (normal on Diani).

10–11 Fri Feb 5 – Sat Feb 6 2 dives/day with Diving The Crab on Diani’s fringing reefs (short boat rides), or swap one day for the Kisite-Mpunguti marine-park dhow trip (dolphins, turtles; longer drive + boat).
12 Sun Feb 7 Beach/spa — no diving.
13 Mon Feb 8 Fly Ukunda → Nairobi Wilson (midday), transfer to JKIA, overnight flight home.

Diving (Diani)

Diving The Crab (TA 4.6/149, Google 4.6/170) — reef sites off Diani/Galu a few minutes by boat; Kisite-Mpunguti optional. I could not load its 2027 price list, so I budgeted ~$160 pp/day for 2 dives incl. gear (confirm). Dive-to-fly: last dive Sat afternoon → flight Mon midday ≈ 45 h.

Budget for two

# Item (for two) USD Basis
1 Int’l air BOS⇄NBO (live Oct 13: $989–1,222 pp for Jan 29–Feb 12 on Google Flights; $1,013–1,074 for Jan 13–25 on Kayak; budget $1,250 pp) $2,500 live fare

14 Travel clinic, malaria prophylaxis + yellow-fever vaccine (CDC-recommended for the Mara) $1,000 est
15 Comprehensive travel insurance w/ evacuation (two) $1,400 est
16 Meals not included (Diani lunches/drinks on HB, Nairobi, transit) $550 est
17 Misc buffer $600 est
All-in total $23,816
Margin under $30,000 $6,184
Optional: guaranteed private vehicle 6 days ($350/day) +$2,100 → $25,916 rack
Optional splurge: swap Bush Olare for Mara Plains (Great Plains, TA 5.0/262) quote

Motion-sickness notes

Lowest motion exposure of all options: one ≈1 h bush flight in, a 1 h road transfer between camps, one ≈2 h 15 coastal flight, one ≈1 h 15 flight out. Conservancy driving is off-road and bumpy at times — front row helps. Diani dive boats are short rides; skip the Kisite dhow day if seas are up.

Health / visas

Kenya eTA ≈ $30 + fees pp (official eTA, fee guide). CDC recommends yellow-fever vaccine for most of Kenya including the Mara (not Nairobi city/coast) — and if you later add Tanzania/Zanzibar you’ll need the certificate. Malaria prophylaxis advised (CDC Kenya).

Booking urgency

Medium-high. Only 12 tents across both camps; Jan–Feb is less pressured than migration season, but honeymooners and photographers book Kicheche early. Enquire now; Kicheche Mara North (5.0/479, $110 pps cheaper) is the like-for-like backup.

Option 3 — 🌴 Crater, Calving & Kilindi (classic bush-and-beach, most luxurious beach) — $28,336, margin $1,664

Dates Wed Feb 3 → Tue Feb 16, 2027 (14 days; 1 + 2 + 4 + 5 nights)
Why these dates Dead-centre of the February calving peak; Lemala’s honeymoon deal is valid 1 Oct 2026 – 31 May 2027 (excl. 20 Dec–5 Jan); Kilindi showed live availability for Feb 11–15 (and every night in Feb) in its booking engine on Oct 13.
Regions Arusha (1) → Ngorongoro Crater rim (2) → Ndutu (4) → Zanzibar, Kendwa (5)
Camps Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp — 9 tents + 1 two-bedroom, among old acacias on the eastern rim, gas heaters (Magical Africa) → Lemala Ndutu — 9 tents on the edge of a permanent marsh, mobile (Dec–Mar) (Safari.com; some agents list up to 12) → Kilindi Zanzibar (Elewana) — 15 domed pavilions, each with a private plunge pool, 50-acre gardens (Kilindi)
Room / board Lemala standard tents on Game Package (meals, house drinks, shared game drives, airstrip transfers; park fees extra) — inclusions. Kilindi Luxury Garden View Villa, All-Inclusive.
Vehicle policy Lemala runs both shared and private Land Cruisers (open and enclosed) — private is a quote-on-request supplement, not budgeted (Wetu).
Honeymoon perks Lemala: bride 50% off every night + groom’s first night free, minimum 6 nights across Lemala camps, wedding within 12 months, not combinable (Lemala, T&Cs). Kilindi: Honeymoon short-stay offer — 25% off the room for 4+ nights, candle-lit dinner, flowers, wine, turndown, henna, 20% off a spa treatment (7+ nights = 30% + dhow cruise + couples massage) (Elewana 2027 sheet p.26).

Rates used: Lemala Ndutu high season (20 Dec 2026–31 Mar 2027) full board $825 pps, game package $1,020 pps; Lemala Ngorongoro high season (20 Dec 2026–28 Feb 2027) full board $720 pps (Ndutu rates, Ngorongoro rates); the Ngorongoro game-package supplement isn’t published, so I estimated it at the same +$195 as Ndutu. Kilindi Jan 4–Feb 28 all-inclusive $861 pps garden villa / $1,030 ocean villa (Elewana 2027); its own engine showed $1,205/room/night for these dates (likely a lower board basis) — I budgeted the higher all-inclusive rack.

Scubafish, Matemwe — PADI 5★, TA 4.9/763. Four-dive package (2 days) $210 pp, gear $15 pp/day, marine-park fee $10 pp/day (price list). Sites around Mnemba Atoll’s reefs (turtles, reef sharks, dolphins on the surface). From Kendwa, drive to Matemwe rather than boating around the north tip (≈1 h each way of open water is the seasick partner’s worst case). Alternative: One Ocean (PADI 5★, TA 4.6/782, base in Kiwengwa). Dive-to-fly: last dive Sat Feb 13 → flight 01:30 Tue = ≈60 h.

All-in total $28,336
Margin under $30,000 $1,664

Savings levers: stay 4 nights at Kilindi + a late-checkout/day-use room (≈ −$1,000); or swap Kilindi for The Island – Pongwe Lodge (TA 4.9/252, closer to the Mnemba dive bases; price not verified). Elewana alternative: The Manor at Ngorongoro + Serengeti Pioneer Camp (TA 4.9 from 1,230 reviews) with Elewana’s Pay-4-Stay-5 or “Bush & Beach 15% off” — but Pioneer sits at Moru Kopjes, ≥1 h from the core Ndutu calving plains.

Motion-sickness notes

The most road time of any option: 2 h Manyara→rim, the steep crater descent/ascent, and ≈3 h rough gravel Ngorongoro→Ndutu — plus a ≈3.5 h multi-stop flight to Zanzibar and two 1 h drives to dive. Workable with meds and front seats, but this is why Option 1 (fly-in only) ranks higher.

Health / visas

Same as Option 1 (Tanzania eVisa $100 pp, NIC $44 pp, malaria prophylaxis; YF certificate not required via Paris/Amsterdam). Zanzibar’s own $44 insurance is covered by the mainland NIC policy if you land on the mainland first (details).

Booking urgency

High for Lemala Ndutu (9 tents, peak Feb). Kilindi is live-bookable today. Lemala’s site has a live-availability form, but it is reCAPTCHA-gated — ask an agent or email res@lemalacamps.com.

Option 4 — 🧗 Gorillas & Walking Wilderness (Adventure pick) — $24,444, margin $5,556

Dates Mon Feb 1 → Sat Feb 13, 2027 (13 days; 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 nights). With the Diani dive add-on: → Tue Feb 16, ≈ $28,152 (margin ≈ $1,848).
Why these dates Rwanda’s short dry season (mid-Dec–Feb) = firmer, less muddy trails; Kenya’s dry-season mid-rates; avoids the festive blackout.
Regions Kigali (1) → Volcanoes NP, Kinigi (3) → Nairobi (1) → Naboisho & Olare Motorogi conservancies incl. a wild fly-camp (5)
Lodges / camps Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge — small (≈5 forest cottages plus VIP/family wing), Deluxe Forest Cottage full board $431.88/room/night Dec–Feb (Da Vinci rates, size) → Kicheche Valley Naboisho (6 tents) with one night at Kicheche’s wild camp (walk in, dome tents, camp beds, bush shower, cook + camp hand; min 2 / max 6; 16+ only) → Kicheche Bush Olare (6 tents)
Activities Gorilla trek ($1,500 pp permit — one hour with a habituated family), golden-monkey trek ($100 pp — Africa Geographic), walking safaris, night drives (Valley), fly-camp night, dawn balloon
Vehicle policy Private driver-guide in Rwanda; Kicheche shared (≤4 guests typical), private $350/day optional
Honeymoon perks Kicheche Valley bride 50% off (applied here to all 3 Valley nights incl. the wild-camp night — confirm). Kicheche’s packaged 5-night Walking Wilderness ($5,250 pps mid season incl. conservancy fees) is the alternative but isn’t honeymoon-discounted.
Upgrades Da Vinci VIP room ($1,600/night FB incl. in-room drinks, massage, jacuzzi) or Amakoro Songa (TA 4.9/98; ≈$2,050/room/night FB on 2026 rack — Chalo Africa) for ≈ +$3,500–4,900; Virunga Lodge is $2,205 pps in high season — over budget (Wetu).

Diving

None in the base plan (the adventure is the point). Add-on: fly Mara → Diani instead of Nairobi for 3 nights at Waterlovers + 2 dive days with Diving The Crab ≈ +$3,708 → return Tue Feb 16.

Budget for two

# Item (for two) USD Basis

17 Comprehensive travel insurance (two) $1,400 est
18 Meals not included (Kigali, Nairobi, transit) $350 est
19 Misc buffer $600 est
All-in total $24,444
Margin under $30,000 $5,556
Optional Diani add-on (3 nights, 2 dive days) +$3,708 → $28,152

Motion-sickness notes

The Kigali⇄Kinigi road (2–2.5 h each way) has many curves — the main exposure; take meds before both drives. Flights are short (KGL–NBO 1.5 h; Mara hops ≈1 h). Walking days are motion-free.

Health / visas

Rwanda visa on arrival $50 pp (US) (Africa Unpacked). Rwanda only asks for a yellow-fever certificate if you arrive from a risk country (you won’t — Amsterdam), but get the YF shot anyway: CDC recommends it for the Mara, and Kenya/Tanzania can demand it. Malaria in both countries (CDC Rwanda). Gorilla rules: 15+, no trekking if you have a cold/flu.

Booking urgency

High for permits (~96 per day across the park; Jan–Feb is a dry-season favourite). Buy permits as soon as dates are fixed, then lodges.

Option 5 — 🌿 Botswana Secret Season & Bazaruto (Southern-Africa alternative) — $28,088, margin $1,912

Dates Sun Jan 31 → Sat Feb 13, 2027 (14 days; 1 JNB + 3 + 3 + 1 JNB + 3 nights)
Why these dates Machaba’s “Secret Season” rates run 11 Jan – 31 Mar 2027; green, lush, baby animals, predators active. Trade-offs: heat, afternoon storms, some flooded tracks, limited water activities (flood arrives mid-year), and Mozambique’s cyclone season.
Camps Machaba Camp (Khwai) — 10 tents (8 luxury + 2 family), game drives, walking, mokoro (water-dependent) → Gomoti Plains (Okavango) — 10 tents, drives, walks, boating/mokoro water-dependent (Machaba 2027 rates) → Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort — 44 villas inside Bazaruto National Park, PADI dive centre (Anantara)
Board Machaba camps fully inclusive (meals, drinks excl. premium, activities, laundry, airstrip transfers); Anantara budgeted at half board.
Vehicle policy Shared; private vehicle $600/night (Machaba).
Honeymoon perks None published by Machaba (ask); ask Anantara for its honeymoon package.

Diving

Anantara’s in-house PADI centre or Odyssea Dive (Vilanculos) to Two-Mile Reef etc. Budgeted ~$190 pp/day (estimate — confirm). Boat rides are open-water and can be choppy; cyclone-season weather can cancel days. Dive-to-fly: last dive Feb 11 → flight Feb 12 13:30 is only ~24 h if you dive the afternoon of the 11th — dive mornings only.

All-in total $28,088
Margin under $30,000 $1,912

Saving lever: 6 nights at Machaba Camp only (skip Gomoti) ≈ −$2,600.

Motion-sickness notes

The most transport of any option: two long-hauls, four regional jets, three light-aircraft hops in Botswana (often bumpy in afternoon heat) and an open-water speedboat crossing to Bazaruto (25+ min) — plus open-water dive boats. Fly mornings where possible and medicate early.

Health / visas / risks

US citizens: Botswana visa-free (but Botswana is consulting on large tourism-fee hikes for 2026/27 — report); Mozambique is visa-exempt but now requires an eTA (~$48 pp — verify on the official portal) (gov portal, guide). Malaria in northern Botswana and all of Mozambique (CDC Botswana, CDC Mozambique).

Booking urgency

Medium (green season is quieter) — but it has the most moving parts (8 flights, 2 Johannesburg nights) and the thinnest margin.

4. Health, visas & entry — at a glance (US passports)

Country Visa / entry Yellow fever Malaria Other
Tanzania (incl. Zanzibar, Mafia) eVisa $100 pp (official) — apply 3–4 weeks ahead Certificate required only if arriving from / transiting ≥12 h in a YF-risk country (Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda…). Not needed via AMS/CDG/DOH. Yes, all areas <1,800 m incl. islands (CDC) Mandatory NIC inbound insurance $44 pp from Oct 1, 2026 (covers Zanzibar too)
Kenya eTA ≈ $30 + fees pp (etakenya.go.ke) CDC recommends for most of Kenya incl. the Mara Yes (CDC) Kenya → Tanzania/Zanzibar later requires YF certificate
Rwanda Visa on arrival $50 pp Certificate only if arriving from a risk country Yes (CDC) Gorilla permits $1,500 pp; age 15+
Botswana Visa-free Only if arriving from risk country North (Okavango) seasonal (CDC) Fee changes under discussion for 2026/27
Mozambique Visa-exempt but eTA (~$48 pp, verify) Only if arriving from risk country Yes (CDC) Cyclone season Jan–Mar
  • Passports: 6+ months’ validity and 2+ blank pages.
  • Malaria pills: atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone generic) is the usual pick for a beach finish; doxycycline increases sunburn risk. Start per your travel clinic.
  • Yellow fever vaccine (Kenya options, or any Kenya↔Tanzania routing): book a travel clinic early — supply can be limited; certificate valid from 10 days after the shot.
  • Diving + meds: test any motion-sickness medication on land before the trip; scopolamine patches and sedating antihistamines can blunt alertness under water — ask the clinic/DAN. Keep logbooks/cards handy; a refresher dive on day 1 is cheap insurance after the safari break.
  • Insurance: make sure the $1,400 policy covers scuba to your planned depth, medical evacuation from remote airstrips, and trip interruption; DAN is budgeted in every dive option.

5. Motion-sickness playbook (one partner)

Exposure Least → most Tips
Overall Option 2 (Kenya) → Option 1 → Option 4 → Option 5 → Option 3 Fly-in itineraries win.
Light aircraft (Cessna Caravans) Morning flights are smoother than afternoon thermals Sit forward over the wing, eyes on the horizon, ginger + meclizine 1 h before; tell the pilot.
Game drives Off-road plains (Ndutu, conservancies) can be jolting Front row; ask for a private vehicle if budget allows (Kicheche $350/day).
Roads Ngorongoro→Ndutu ≈3 h gravel (Option 3); Kigali→Kinigi winding 2–2.5 h (Option 4) Medicate 1 h before; frequent stops.
Boats Chole Bay (Mafia) = most sheltered; Diani reefs = short rides; Mnemba from Matemwe = short; Bazaruto/Kisite = longer open water; whale-shark boats idle and roll Dive mornings; stay on deck looking at the horizon; get in the water quickly.

CDC guidance on prevention/meds: CDC Yellow Book.

6. Booking plan & urgency (we’re ~3–4 months out from peak season)

  1. This week: decide between Options 1 and 2; send enquiries (2–3 date spreads) to Asilia (Olakira; backup Ubuntu) and/or Kicheche (Valley + Bush Olare; backup Mara North). Peak-February Ndutu tents are the scarcest item in this whole report.
  2. As soon as camps confirm: buy the long-haul tickets (fares above were “typical” per Google’s price insight); book Coastal/Safarilink via the camp or agent so connections are protected.
  3. Rwanda (Option 4): buy gorilla permits before anything else.
  4. Paperwork: marriage certificate (certified copy) — honeymoon offers require proof (Kicheche: within 12 months; Lemala: 12 months; Elewana/Kilindi & Nomad: certificate issued within 6 months). You marry Jan 1, so agree with each operator now that you’ll send it after the wedding.
  5. Nov–Dec: travel clinic (malaria, YF if Kenya), motion-sickness trial, DAN + trip insurance, Tanzania eVisa + NIC policy / Kenya eTA.

Live availability confirmed (Oct 13): Kilindi Zanzibar — available every night Jan 4–Feb 28, 2027 from $1,205/room (engine). All long-haul and regional fares listed were live. Not confirmable online: Olakira, Pole Pole, Kicheche (ResRequest login), Lemala (reCAPTCHA form), Machaba, Da Vinci — enquiry required.

7. Considered and rejected

Idea Why not (for this couple / window / budget)
Namiri Plains (Asilia) — TA 5.0 (867), the Serengeti’s cheetah camp ≈$2,470 pp per night all-in in Jan–Feb (AfricanMecca); only workable as a 1–2-night splurge.
Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp — TA 4.9 (345), 6 tents ≈$1,670 pp/day all-in (AfricanMecca) and Nomad’s 50%-off-one-spouse honeymoon deal excludes it (valid at Lamai, Entamanu, Sand Rivers, Greystoke — Nomad offers). Great backup if Olakira is full.
Mnemba Island Lodge (andBeyond) ≈$3,515 pp per extra night (AfricanMecca) — far over budget.
Matemwe Lodge (ex-Asilia), closest to Mnemba Closed — sold to Attitude Hotels for redevelopment (Selling Travel).
andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge Listed as closed Jan–Feb 2027 (AfricanMecca).
Tarangire in Feb Wet season; elephants disperse.
Northern Serengeti / Mara River camps Herds are in the south in Jan–Feb.
Masai Mara National Reserve (vs. conservancies) More vehicles at sightings; no night drives/walks.
Uganda (Bwindi) gorillas Cheaper permit ($800) but longer, bumpier roads or extra charters, and a YF certificate is required for entry — Rwanda is smoother for a motion-sensitive traveller.
Zambia — South Luangwa Most bush camps closed in the rains (Nov–Apr) (guide).
Namibia Hot, game dispersed, long drives, no diving.
South Africa — Sabi Sands/Timbavati + Mozambique Very good leopards and cheaper flights, but summer heat/rain and the same Mozambique cyclone-season caveat; less distinctive than Feb in East Africa. A fine Plan C.
Pemba (e.g., The Manta Resort) Superb wall diving but extra flights/remote; poorer value than Mafia or Zanzibar here.
Seychelles / Mauritius finish Expensive; Jan–Feb is the wetter NW-monsoon / cyclone season.
Tofo (Mozambique) mantas/whale sharks Surf launches through breakers — rough for a seasick partner.
Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp — TA 4.9 (1,230) Excellent and well-priced (game package $1,351 pps, Pay-4-Stay-5 valid Jan–Feb) but at Moru Kopjes, ≥1 h from the core Ndutu calving plains. Kept as an Option 3 variant.

8. Top open questions & risks

  1. Peak-season availability: Olakira/Lemala Ndutu in late Jan–Feb are likely heavily booked 3–4 months out and can’t be checked online — enquire immediately and hold backups (Ubuntu, Nomad SSC, Lemala Ndutu).
  2. Honeymoon-offer fine print: confirm Asilia’s 25%-each applies in peak calving dates; Lemala’s 6-night minimum; Kicheche’s 50% on the wild-camp night; documentation timing for a Jan 1 wedding.
  3. Estimated lines to firm up: Lemala Ngorongoro game-package supplement, Tanzania road transfers, Diani dive prices, Anantara board basis & Bazaruto transfers, Rwanda driver-guide. All are padded, but get written quotes.
  4. Weather & wildlife variability: the herds follow the rain (they may sit inside Serengeti NP — contingency fees budgeted); a few rain showers are normal; Mozambique cyclone risk in Option 5.
  5. Health/motion: malaria prophylaxis and (for Kenya) yellow-fever vaccine timing; a land test of the motion-sickness regimen that’s also dive-safe; whale-shark boats are the hardest moment in Option 1.
